The work functions to initially trick the audience into believing the constructed illusion, and to leave visual identifiers of the photograph’s falsehood; for the viewer to work through their own realization of it’s fabrication. The images are presented in parts that exist as pieces of a reality that can never be a whole truth; disrupting the idea of the whole. There is a push and a pull between the things that are desirable in the photographs and the things that are forgotten; that have slipped from their historical meaning or value. The project poses the opportunity to create a real world that is populated with lies as it confuses identities, historical periods, cultures, places and narratives with the props and spaces used through each construction. The process requires a thoughtfulness in the deconstruction of preconceived style expectations, and a critique of what is cohesiveness in visualities. The work draws influence from my history as a celebrity retoucher. I find myself here in an academic institution where I have dropped out of the kingdom of visual seductiveness, and I find spaces in this series to slip in and out of this refusal of beauty and seduction. I find humanity in rupturing that illusion of unattainable desires and the contemporary condition of longing and dissatisfaction.
